About us

The “Studienkolleg” represents a European model of "good practice” for the successful preparation for general studies together with intensive supervision in preparation for specific study programs. Moreover, the “Studienkolleg” also includes degree-related and social counseling which accompanies students along their way to beginning studies at the TU Berlin and helps them develop their full potential. This is necessary because failure means a negative experience for the person in question, but it also represents a waste of institutional resources. As the university entrance qualifications of international applicants from certain European, Asian, African, and American countries are only partially comparable to the German “Abitur”, it is necessary for such applicants to take the “Assessment Test” before beginning of regular studies. This is an abbreviated title for the "Prüfung zur Feststellung der Eignung ausländischer Studienbewerber für die Aufnahme eines Studiums an Hochschulen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland".

In order to prepare for the assessment test, the “Studienkolleg” offers international students the opportunity to participate in a preparatory course for studies with a language component and a subject-related component, which is a kind of preliminary study program. Additionally, preparatory instruction in core disciplines is also offered and the assessment test is also carried out here.

As a rule, this preliminary training takes one year (two semesters). In cases with specific justification, each semester may be repeated once – thus, the maximum time period that can be spent at the “Kolleg” is two years.

Students with very good performance in the first semester (“sprinters”) may be admitted to the assessment test after one semester or admitted to individual subjects of examination (modules) after one semester.

The assessment test may be taken internally (after attending the “Studienkolleg”) as well as externally.

Preparatory institutions also exist outside of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In the context of the “GRUNDTVIG Project” financed by the EU there is:
CHAGAL (Curriculum for Higher Education, Access Programs, Guidelines for Underrepresented Adult Learners) where Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands (with their respective preliminary educational facilities) are also represented.
